Cyclone Freddy: Rare and deadly storm to hit Mozambique again

Tropical storm Filippo has hit Mozambique, leaving hundreds of thousands of residents in urgent need of humanitarian support. The storm, which landed in Inhambane province in Mozambique, comes just one year after Cyclone Freddy destroyed several parts of Mozambique and Malawi, and left hundreds of thousands, residents without food, water, or shelter.

Severe communities and means of communications has been disrupted. Series of disasters have made it very difficult for affected communities to recover and rebuild their lives. Most challenging is the affected farming season which has been seriously disrupted either due to El Nino-induced weeks of dry season or floods. As a result of climate change which intensified the dry season and floods for a more prolonged period, crops has been  negatively affected denying the local farmers their ability to recover.

At the moment millions of residents are seriously facing hunger, while many are surviving on wild roots and tubers. “Last week, we stayed a day without eating anything and the following day we survived on porridge only. This year has been harsh as well since all the crops that we planted have dried up”.
Eliza Anthony from Malawi’s Chikwawa district was also among the victims whose families and houses were washed away by the Cyclone Freddy floods said:

Meanwhile over three people have being confirmed died and one person has been hospitalized as the Tropical Storm Filipo hits the southern Mozambique’ province, according to the state-owned broadcaster.
Roofs have been pulled off, residential houses and school buildings. More especially In the tourist areas of Tofo and Barra, the waves have damaged several fishing boats as the tropical storm Filipo continues to batter the province, with a heavy rainfall and wild winds.

The effects are already being felt around and within the areas of Maputo the capital of the country of Mozambique.
